Energy and Clean Technology

UC Berkeley and the Haas School have had a long commitment to energy. As part of that commitment, the Haas School offers the Berkeley MBA student a range of courses and programs to prepare them to lead businesses that address market, policy, and technological challenges in the energy industry. Many of these are centered in the Energy Institute at Haas, a joint venture of the Haas School and the UC Energy Institute.

On the wider UC Berkeley campus, a broad array of energy and natural resource-related courses are offered through various programs and centers. Given the emerging pressure to confront our most dramatic energy problems using the tools of both the business and public policy worlds, it is important to understand both of these disciplines in addition to the fundamental science, engineering, and environmental perspectives.

Energy and Environmental Markets

Drawing on the tools of economics and finance, students study the business and public policy issues confronting energy and environmental markets. The class examines the economic determinants of industry structure and evolution of competition among firms in these industries; investigates successful and unsuccessful strategies for entering new markets and competing in existing markets; and analyzes the rationale for and effects of public policies in energy markets.

Cleantech to Market (C2M)

MBA students team up with masters and PhD students from engineering, science, law, and policy to experience firsthand the challenges and rewards of transferring new energy technologies to the marketplace. Each interdisciplinary team is assigned to a scientist from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory or from across the UC Berkeley campus. The students perform actual market research on their scientist’s invention under the guidance of the scientist, UC Berkeley faculty and diverse energy industry mentors. The result is a powerful engagement of students in bridging the gap from lab to market. Within the limits of confidentiality, the teams may also contact potential licensing partners. At the end of the semester, the team’s findings are presented to professional audiences.

Provides an in-depth look at the financial, legal, and regulatory issues associated with the development and financing of energy projects, with a particular focus on alternative energy projects.

Renewable Energy Speaker Series

Students have the chance to hear entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and technical experts discuss a variety of alternative energy sectors. Topics include photovoltaics, biofuels, wind energy, batteries, and energy efficiency.

Energy Institute at Haas

The Energy Institute at Haas is a joint venture of the Haas School of Business and the UC Energy Institute that brings together research and curricular programs on energy business, policy and technology commercialization. The goal of EI @ Haas is to bridge the gap between the frontiers of economic and scientific energy research and the marketplace.
